HellFire Pass
Interpretive Centre

 When you go home

tell them of us and say

We gave our tomorrow

For your today

At the Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre, we inform visitors through stories and walking trails. These trails follow the paths made by those who suffered here.

Located in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, our centre presents the difficult lives of Allied POWs (Prisoners of War) and Asian civilian labourers who were forced to work for the Japanese.

We aim to preserve the memory of the military prisoners and civilian labourers of Hellfire Pass, through continuing to share their stories of hardship and survival and acknowledging the sacrifice of those who lost their lives.

Hellfire Pass, part

of the infamous Death Railway

Hellfire Pass was cut through the thick jungles of Thailand by Allied prisoners of war and Asian civilian labourers during World War II. It was formed to connect Thailand and Burma by rail for Japanese military use. Conditions were very harsh with many prisoners dying from hunger, disease, and brutal treatment. This place saw great suffering and loss of life.

The origin of the name ‘Hellfire Pass’ reflects the sight of the emaciated prisoners working toiling through the night, the pass lit only by open-flamed torches. A prisoner likened this to a scene from Dante’s Inferno – seemingly a vision of hell itself.

The railway was completed at terrible cost. Tens of thousands died. Today, Hellfire Pass is a memorial to the strength and spirit of those who suffered. It reminds us of the horrors of war, and a hope for peace for future generations.
